Tooth Extractions
Our Ann Arbor dentists are dedicated to caring for every smile. Sometimes, however, a tooth turns out to be beyond the point of saving and we must resort to extraction. Don’t worry, there’s nothing to fear as the tooth extraction process is designed to be straightforward and as pain-free as possible.
When Are Extractions Necessary?
Tooth extraction is typically a last resort for our dentists. In general, we will consider every other method available to save the tooth, i.e., root canals or same-day crowns, but there are times when that just isn’t possible.
Every patient is different and not everyone shares the same reason for tooth removal. However, there are a few common instances where our dentists will make the decision to move forward with the extraction procedure. In every scenario, the decision is made in your best interest as we take into account not only your current oral health, but your future health as well.
You may need to have a tooth extracted if there is:
- Tooth Decay
- Tooth Infection
- An Impacted Tooth
- Severe Crowding of Teeth
- Advanced Periodontitis (Gum Disease)
What Can I Expect?
You can rest assured that you’ll be taken care of throughout your tooth extraction. To make sure you’re comfortable, our dentists will start by numbing the area where the tooth is going to be removed.
Once the numbing has taken effect, the extraction process can begin. We’ll first use a tool called an “elevator” to properly loosen the tooth in the gum so it’s easier to take out. The dental elevator comes in handy for all simple extractions but also for cases where the tooth is impacted.
After the tooth has been loosened, our dentists will use forceps to carefully remove the tooth. It’s normal to feel slight pressure when this happens but there shouldn’t be any pain. Please let us know if you do notice any discomfort and we will apply additional anesthetic.
